What is Ultimate Math?

Ultimate Math is an in-person math program for children in Grades 1 to 8, built as twenty levels across four tracks. A free assessment finds the exact idea your child is stuck on and sets their starting level. We write a report on every class, and they arrive together every Sunday morning.

What your child actually learns

They can explain their method

Not just the answer. A child who can say why they carried the one is a child who will still be able to do it in June.

They can attack a problem they have never seen

Reading a question, deciding what it is asking and choosing a method is the part most worksheets skip. It is practised here every week.

They know which idea they are weak on

Named, in plain English, by them. That is what turns homework from an argument into twenty minutes of something specific.

They can show their working to a teacher

Setting work out so somebody else can follow it is a habit, and it is worth marks in every grade from here on.

Her marks are fine. Why would we do this?

Because a B on a Grade 5 test and a broken model of fractions look identical on a report card. A child can score well for two years by pattern-matching the question types their teacher sets, and the gap only surfaces in Grade 8 algebra, where nothing works unless the idea underneath it is sound.

A report card grades the answers. It is not designed to tell you which idea produced them, and no teacher marking thirty scripts a night has time to write that down for you.

If nothing is broken, the assessment will say so, and you will have spent an hour finding out.

Why your child is stuck

Almost every wrong answer in primary mathematics is a right answer to a slightly different question. The child is following a rule that works, applied somewhere it does not. Find the rule and the marks follow. Mark the answer wrong and nothing changes.

What it means

She is applying whole-number reasoning to fractions, so 1/3 looks bigger than 1/2 because 3 is bigger than 2.

That sentence is what a parent gets from us and cannot get from a mark out of ten. It is also what the instructor teaches to in the next class, rather than setting twenty more fraction questions.

    Your child works, we watch

    Sixty minutes of real questions across the strands, in a real class, not a multiple-choice test at a screen. What they do when they are stuck matters more than the score.

    We name the idea, not the mark

    The instructor writes down the specific misconceptions behind the wrong answers, in the same plain English we use in every report afterwards.

    We set the starting level

    One of the twenty levels, chosen so the first thing your child meets is the thing that is actually broken. Almost nobody starts at Level 1.

A report on every class, every Sunday

Not a term-end summary and not a mark. Six lines written at the end of every session by the instructor who taught it, in the same words they would use if you were standing there. They arrive together on Sunday morning.

Level 11: Fractions and Decimals

What we worked on
Comparing fractions with different denominators, using a number line rather than a rule.
The idea we went after
Amira was ordering fractions by their denominators, so she read 1/3 as larger than 1/2.
Evidence it moved
She placed 2/5, 1/2 and 3/4 on a number line unaided, then caught her own error on 5/8 without being asked.
What to practise at home
Ten minutes: name a fraction, ask her to show you roughly where it sits between 0 and 1. No worksheet.

Every family gets this for every class their child attends. It is the thing we do that a mark out of ten cannot.

Twenty levels, counting to contest problems

Every level is ten 60-minute sessions and ends with a showcase and a certificate. Each level carries two names: the level name, and the project name that appears on the certificate.

Ages are typical, not fixed. The free assessment sets the starting level, and a child who is ahead in one strand and behind in another is placed on what they need rather than on their birthday.

In Ontario, coding expectations sit inside the mathematics curriculum itself, in the Algebra strand, at every grade from 1 to 8. These four levels are where we cover that ground.

The four tracks

Sequential, one to twenty. Provincial curricula spiral through every strand each year rather than teaching them in blocks, so the ladder follows the grades rather than the topics.

How this connects to what they learn at school

Ultimate Math is taught against the Ontario curriculum, grade by grade and strand by strand, so what your child does here is the same content their teacher is working through rather than a parallel syllabus. Ontario is also the reason four of the twenty levels carry coding: the expectations sit inside the mathematics curriculum itself.

How classes work

You choose how often your child comes: once, twice or three times a week. Every session is 60 minutes with up to six students per instructor, and the free assessment sets the level they start on.

Grades 1 and 2 work with physical materials in the room: counters, number lines, blocks and coins. Their home practice is short and needs a parent alongside, because at six and seven a child cannot yet set up and check their own. If nobody at home has ten minutes twice a week, wait a year rather than enrol now.

Best for a child who is broadly fine and has one idea to repair, or who is already carrying several other activities.

Two 60-minute sessions

Best for most children. One session introduces the idea and the next comes back to it before it has faded, which is where the repair actually happens.

Best where there is ground to make up, or a child who wants the harder problems and finishes the set early.

Levels are not a term. A child joins the level the assessment placed them on, whenever they start, and moves up when they have finished it.

Six students per instructor

Mixed levels in the room by design, with each child on their own level's work. Six is the number at which an instructor can still watch how a child is thinking rather than only what they wrote.

Sixty minutes, ten sessions a level

Every session runs 60 minutes, and every level is ten of them. A child who is ahead can move up a level early.

The free assessment sets the level

A real 60-minute class. Your child works, the instructor watches, and you leave knowing which idea is broken and which level fits.

Home practice is assigned and reviewed

Short, specific and set from what happened in the class. It is looked at in the next session, so it is not optional and it is not busywork.

Is Ultimate Math the right fit?

Right on the line at 6?

Grade 1 is the floor, and it is a real floor rather than a soft one. A child in Senior Kindergarten is welcome to sit the assessment, and if the instructor thinks another year would serve them better, they will say so and you will not be sold a place.

Finished Grade 8?

Level 20 is the end of this program. A student going into Grade 9 who wants to keep going is better served by high-school mathematics support, which we do not run, or by Ultimate Innovator if the interest has turned towards computing.

Compared with the alternatives

Three things worth knowing before you choose, each of which you can check yourself.

  • Kumon

    Kumon works through its own worksheet sequence rather than tracking a provincial curriculum. That is a design choice rather than a fault, and it suits a family who wants daily repetition. It is a different thing from what your child is being assessed on at school.

  • Mathnasium

    Mathnasium does not publish a price in Canada. Ours is on your local centre's page, before you speak to anybody.

  • Spirit of Math

    Spirit of Math requires a B+ to enrol. That is a reasonable entry bar for an enrichment program, and it excludes most of the children whose parents are reading this page.

We have deliberately not published a side-by-side table of contact hours, group sizes and prices for these three. We have not verified those figures, and a comparison table is not the place to estimate them.

Research on tutoring generally, rather than a claim about our own results: in a randomised trial of 783 tutors, students of AI-supported tutors were 4 percentage points more likely to master the lesson, and 9 points for students of less-experienced tutors. Questions parents ask us

Is Grade 1 too young?

No, but it looks different. Grade 1 and 2 classes work with counters, number lines and coins rather than with worksheets, and their home practice is short and needs a parent alongside. If that is not workable at home right now, another year will not cost your child anything.

My child hates math. Will this make it worse?

Most children who say they hate math are describing the feeling of not knowing why they got it wrong. The assessment names the idea, the instructor teaches to that idea, and the report tells you what moved. Six in a room also means nobody is answering in front of thirty people.

What if my child is ahead rather than behind?

They are placed on what they can already do, not on their grade, so a child working two years ahead starts two years ahead. Levels 16 to 20 include contest-style problems with no obvious method, which is usually what a bored strong student is missing.

Do you do homework help?

Not as the lesson. We teach the level your child was placed on, because working through tonight's sheet fixes tonight and nothing else. An instructor will happily look at a piece of homework at the end of a session if the idea behind it is the one you are working on.

How is this different from Kumon?

Kumon works through its own worksheet sequence rather than tracking a provincial curriculum, and it is built around daily repetition at home. Ultimate Math is taught in person in groups of six, follows the curriculum your child is assessed on, and names the specific idea behind a wrong answer, in a report on every class.

Can we add math to the coding classes we already do?

Yes, and it is the most common way families start. Math added to an existing coding enrolment is 25 per cent off the math price at your centre, sibling discounts still apply, and the two run on separate days so nothing is dropped to make room.

What if we miss a week?

Levels are ten sessions rather than a fixed term, so a missed week moves your child's finishing point rather than costing them the content. Tell your centre in advance and they will tell you what a make-up looks like there.

Do you follow the school curriculum?

Yes. Lessons are written against the Ontario curriculum, grade by grade and strand by strand, which is also what EQAO in Grades 3, 6 and 9 test. Your child is not learning a parallel syllabus here.

What happens in the assessment?

Your child sits a real 60-minute class and works through questions across the strands while the instructor watches how they handle the ones they cannot do. You leave with the specific misconceptions written down in plain English and a recommended starting level. It is free and there is nothing to buy at the end of it.

When do we get the reports?

Every Sunday morning. The instructor writes a report at the end of each class while it is fresh, and they arrive together in one email — two classes that week means two reports in one message.

What technology do you use?

Paper, pencils and physical materials for most of it, because writing mathematics out by hand is part of learning it. Screens are used for practice and for the levels that cover coding. Nothing needs buying at home, and no child needs to bring a device.
